The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has adopted a referendum to create 12 more local government areas in the state, in addition to the already existing 13 local government areas.
This the assembly said is to bring government closer to the people, thereby ameliorating their sufferings.
The adoption of the referendum which was unanimously endorsed by members of the assembly took place during plenary.
The proposed new local government areas are Ikwo South and Ikwo North to be created from Ikwo Local Government Area, Ekumenyi from Abakaliki Local Government Area, Ebyia from Izzi Local Government Area and Ndiagbo from Edda Local Government Area, while Ishielu South is to be carved out from the existing Ishielu Local Government Area.
Others include, Akaeze, Ukaba, and Effium to be created from Ivo, Onicha and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas, respectively, Ezza-South, Ezza-North and Afikpo Local Government Areas are expected to produce Izzikworo, Amohai and Imoha Local Government Areas.

The referendum when gazetted would bring the total number of local government areas in the state to 25.
The move is expected to reduce the development and economic cproblems of the people, and equally bridge the perceived imbalance in local government distribution in the state, considering the landmass and population density in each of the existing local government areas.
The motion for the adoption of the referendum was moved by the Chief Whip of the House and the member, representing Edda West, Nkemka Okoro-Onuma, and was seconded by the member representing Ikwo North State Constituency, Ifeanyi Nwakpu.
During the plenary, a bill for a law to establish the Ebonyi State Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Commission, also passed first reading.
