A notorious bandit leader, Isiya Akwashi Garwa, has released dozens of kidnapped individuals in the Faskari Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
This information was shared on Wednesday by conflict journalist Bakatsine, who has been reporting on insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest. He stated that the victims were released without any ransom and were returned to local authorities.
“Bandits have freed many abductees in Faskari LGA, Katsina State, without ransom after negotiations. The bandit leader, Isiya Akwashi Garwa, handed them over to local officials. Most of the released captives are from the villages of Mairua, Kanon-haki, and Yar Dabaru,” Bakatsine wrote.
Garwa, who has been declared wanted by the Defence Headquarters, is among the 19 most-wanted terrorists and bandits in Nigeria. His name has been associated with numerous killings, kidnappings, and raids in Katsina and surrounding states.

Reports suggest that Garwa has recently accepted a peace agreement in Katsina State. Counter-insurgency expert Zagazola Makama noted that Garwa appeared in the Hayin Gada community in Faskari, presenting himself as a proponent of dialogue.
Makama pointed out that Garwa’s apparent change in attitude has sparked mixed reactions among residents and security analysts.
“Despite his violent history, Garwa’s recent behavior indicates a potential shift in strategy, as local leaders and security stakeholders consider the implications of his acceptance of peace terms,” Makama said.
While some residents see the release of the abductees as a positive step towards restoring peace in their troubled communities, others remain doubtful, questioning the sincerity of the bandit leader and recalling the violent acts committed by his group.
