Doctors, staff at premier Kano public hospital call off strike

Medical doctors and other staff of the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano, have called off their strike and resumed work following the quick intervention of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, in the industrial dispute between the hospital’s staff and the management of the premier public health facility.

Chairman of the Kano State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Dr.. Abdurrahman, confirmed that doctors have resumed full services at the hospital.

Speaking at the Government House, Kano. Dr. Abdurrahman expressed appreciation to Gov. Yusuf, for his swift action in addressing the conflict, which stemmed from a misunderstanding between a a doctor at the hospital doctor and a commissioner in the state.

He stated that the decision to end the strike followed a productive meeting with Gov. Yusuf, who, according to him, facilitated a peaceful resolution of the issues that warranted the strike.

The NMA state chairman appreciated the governor for averting a further disruption to critical healthcare services in the state and in ensuring the continuity of the healthcare services for Kano residents.

Also, Dr. Abdulrahman urged the public to in the future report any grievances against any medical worker through official channels, assuring that any dispute involving patients and healthcare staff would be handled with fairness and transparency by the NMA.

It would be recalled that Gov. Yusuf, had before the strike was called off, appealed to the striking hospital doctors during a live radio interview, asking them to reconsider their decision to embark on strike to avoid jeopardizing the health needs of vulnerable patients, including pregnant women and children.
