Novak Djokovic advanced to the US Open quarter-finals after an impressive 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 victory against Jan-Lennard Struff, as concerns about his physical fitness linger

The Serbian star, aiming for a record 25th Grand Slam title, won in a commanding 6-3, 6-3, 6-2 match that lasted under two hours, showing little sign of trouble even after receiving medical assistance twice.

While this win showcased Djokovic’s skill, concerns about his physical fitness linger, especially since he is competing in his first tournament since his Wimbledon semi-final loss in July, having missed the ATP Masters events in Toronto and Cincinnati.

He appeared fatigued in his initial matches in New York and faced a lower back issue during his third-round victory over Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

Signs of wear were evident again as he called for a physio to address neck and right forearm problems during the match against Struff.

Nevertheless, these challenges did not affect his performance, as he dominated with powerful shots, recording 33 winners and 12 aces without any double faults.

Djokovic credited his strong serving for his success on Arthur Ashe Stadium, noting that “it definitely helps if you serve well. I think I had a great serving performance in the last round and also tonight.”

He also mentioned that he out-served one of the tournament’s top ace leaders, which made his game easier.

In the quarter-finals, Djokovic will face American Taylor Fritz, who secured a straight-set victory over Czech player Tomas Machac.

Djokovic shared that his daughter Tara was unhappy about his match coinciding with her birthday, saying that “she was not very happy about it, me being absent from the birthday party.

“Don’t remind me of that, please.” However, he plans to win the match as a gift for her and send her surprises for her celebration.

At 38 years and 94 days old, Djokovic became the oldest player in the Open era to reach the quarter-finals at all four Grand Slam events in a single season.

Reflecting on playing during the night session at Arthur Ashe Stadium, he remarked, “I don’t know how many more I am going to have, so each one is very special.”

With his career winding down, he recognizes the urgency in his quest for a record 25th major title.

Djokovic started strong against Struff, quickly taking a 4-0 lead with a double break before his opponent managed to score.
