The Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Adolphus Wabara, has declared that Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has no constitutional right to remain in office after publicly renouncing his membership of the PDP and declaring himself “partyless.”

Wabara, a former Senate President, described Diri’s decision as a direct violation of the Nigerian Constitution, insisting that the governor had automatically forfeited his mandate by abandoning the political party that brought him to power.

“There is no government in Bayelsa State. There’s no democracy in Bayelsa State,” Wabara said. “Our Constitution does not accommodate independent candidacy. For a governor to dump the party that brought him to power and claim he is ‘partyless’ is unconstitutional. Staying without a political platform is an impeachable offence.”

He condemned what he called the growing culture of impunity among Nigerian politicians, warning that disregard for constitutional provisions could undermine the country’s democratic process. “What kind of democracy are we practising?” Wabara asked. “How can Governor Diri continue to see himself as governor when he has no political platform? The Constitution is clear, there is no room for independent candidates. Once you leave your party without joining another, you lose your mandate.”

Despite his criticism of Diri, Wabara expressed optimism that the PDP would recover its strength ahead of the 2027 general election. He said the party remains Nigeria’s most credible political platform and predicted that many defectors would eventually return.

“The PDP will bounce back stronger. Those who have left will realise soon enough that the PDP remains the only credible alternative for good governance,” he stated, urging members across the country to stay united and committed to the party’s ideals.
