Piqued by the infrastructural deficit of post-primary schools, Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has embarked on an assessment tour to get first-hand information on the state of post-primary schools to revamp fallen infrastructure of existing schools and the construction of new projects in the state.

This is coming against the backdrop of concerns raised over the weak and obsolete infrastructure of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Kaiama in Kolokuma-Opokuma Local Government Area of the State.

Contained in a statement by the State Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Hon. Ayibaina Duba, made available for Journalists in Yenagoa, the Governor swiftly directed the Commissioner for Education, Dr Gentle Emelah, to visit post-primary schools and forward statistics of colleges affected.

“The attention of Bayelsa State Government has been drawn to the infrastructural deficit of Government Girls’ Secondary School Kaiama and the concerns it posed on government.”

Duba averred that Dr Emelah’s visit to the post-primary school was to assess the situation and come up with statistics of affected schools to enable the government to commence the revamping process for students to learn in a conducive environment. He submitted that cases of infrastructural deficit may be peculiar to few schools.

The Commissioner for Information pointed out that Government Girls’ Secondary School Kaiama’s fallen infrastructure was caused by perennial flooding that resulted in the damage of facilities and equipment in the school, even as he reiterated that the ongoing reconstruction of infrastructure by government would be implemented in phases and a systematic manner within the limit of available resources.

Accordingly, Duba said while the renovation and construction process is ongoing, in order not to truncate learning as schools are prepared to write exams, Governor Diri has directed the Commissioner for Education to relocate Government Girls’ Secondary School to a new site and provide the school with necessary facilities to ensure hitch free learning environment.

Duba reiterated Governor Diri’s commitment to ensuring that students get unfettered access to quality learning in a conducive environment; as the government would monitor the reformation to ensure completion within the stipulated time.
