A diaspora group has petitioned Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to reject the posting of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico, citing concerns over his character and suitability for the diplomatic post.
The letter, sent by the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN) and led by Frederick Odorige, described Omokri as “a misfit” and criticized his previous conduct, alleged moral shortcomings, and lack of diplomatic experience.
The group also claimed that the federal government fast-tracked the appointment without proper legislative oversight and that the posting may have been designed to protect Omokri’s personal interests.
GCSDN expressed fears that Omokri’s presence in Mexico could lead to diplomatic and security risks.
The group argued that he might engage in unauthorized protests and actions that could strain bilateral relations between Nigeria and Mexico.
The letter also referenced Omokri’s past controversial statements against President Bola Tinubu and suggested that his appointment served as compensation for abandoning previous opposition political campaigns.

Copies of the letter were reportedly sent to Mexico’s secretary of toreign affairs, the president of the Mexican Senate, and the Mexican Embassy in Nigeria, signaling the group’s intent to ensure the matter receives official attention.
The federal government has yet to respond to the diaspora group’s concerns.
Analysts say the controversy highlights the increasing scrutiny diaspora organizations are placing on high-profile diplomatic postings, especially when appointees have prior political controversies.
