- I’m like a child relishing Christmas aura – Dessers
Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers has joined Serie A side US Cremonese on a permanent deal from Belgian club KRC Genk.
The 27-year-old, who joined KRC Genk two years ago having had a stint in Utrecht, was a vital aspect of Feryenoord’s Europa Conference League campaign last season where he netted 10 times in 13 appearances.
Dessers’ performances while on for the Dutch club were scintillating, poaching in goals to excite the fans of the ‘Club on the Meuse’ with 9 Eredivisie goals from 27 appearances to guarantee the club a third place finish last season.
Resultant of his clinical finishing at De Kuip, Feyenoord fans championed a campaign to retain the loanee permanently through a crowdfunding campaign which was not fruitful.

However, newly promoted Serie A side Cremonese chose the golden opportunity to snap the Super Eagles forward to Stadio Giovanni Zini in a deal worth N2.8billion.
In an official statement after completing the deal, Cremonese said they have “acquired the right to Cyriel Dessers’ sports performances from KRC Genk.”
Meanwhile, KRC Genk after reaching an agreement and finalising a deal with Cremonese for Dessers confirmed it on its official website to announce the development.
“KRC Genk again launches a player towards one of the European G5 competitions. The club has reached an agreement with Cremonese about the transfer of Cyriel Dessers,” the club said.
“In the summer of 2020, after a few tough seasons in the Eredivisie, Cyriel came over from Heracles Almelo. Achievements he also saw rewarded with a debut for the Nigerian national team.
“However, with an incredibly strong Paul Onuachu in as striker, he could not take on a starter status at KRC Genk. He did, however, place an award on his record as a Cup winner.
“The transfer period in the summer of 2021 brought a solution with a loan move to Feyenoord. Cyriel had a great season and finished runner-up in the Conference League.
“However, Feyenoord was unable to exercise the purchase option, so Cyriel again joined in the preparation in the white-blue shirt. He was immediately one of the trendsetters at the start of the Belgian competition.
“Cyriel has decided to go for his dream and head for one of the top European competitions. We thank Cyriel for his efforts for KRC Genk and wish him every success in his further career! Thanks and good luck, Cyriel,” KRC Genk acknowledged.
Consequent to completing the deal to Serie A, Dessers is indeed super excited to move to one of the greatest leagues in the world saying it was his dream come true.
“Picture a child in front of a Christmas tree on Christmas eve, there dreaming about the presents he is going to unwrap in the morning, that is how I feel, exactly like that child,” Dessers said.
“I have always dreamed of playing in the Serie A, one of the most illustrious leagues in the world, it is going to be an exciting challenge, full of obstacles but hugely stimulating.
“We will need to stand together and front up to every battle defending our colours, which colours? Well these [Cremonese’s] grigio and rosso (grey and red), I can’t wait,” he added
Dessers made his debut for the Nigeria Super Eagles on 13 October 2020 under Gernot Rohr and has featured three times to score his first international goal against Mexico in a friendly match in USA.
