The representative for Surulere Constituency II, Desmond Elliot, was visibly emotional as he and his fellow lawmakers gathered to bid farewell to Mojisola Meranda, the first female speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
After a brief 49-day tenure, Meranda resigned from her position, citing pressure as a contributing factor to her decision.
Meranda officially announced her resignation during a special plenary session, reading her resignation letter aloud.
She had taken on the role following the controversial removal of Mudashiru Obasa, who was out of the country at the time, and later returned to assert himself as speaker, creating division within the assembly.

With Meranda’s departure, normalcy was restored, as Obasa was renominated to reclaim the speaker’s position.
In an emotional moment, Elliot struggled to contain his tears, while trying to commend Meranda, illustrating the impact of her brief leadership on the assembly.
“This is a notice of resignation as speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly,” Meranda read her resignation letter out at a special plenary on Monday.
