The Delta State Government has taken a major leap in traffic management and public safety with the official launch of an Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. The innovation, driven by the Commissioner for Transport, Agofure Onoriode, is designed to detect traffic offenders, verify vehicle documents in real time, and enhance state-wide security surveillance.

Key Highlights:

  • ANPR technology scans and verifies number plates instantly through a national database.
  • System linked with the Board of Internal Revenue, FRSC, and other agencies.
  • Alerts automatically generated for expired or invalid vehicle papers.
  • Cameras already installed across Asaba and Warri for 24-hour monitoring.
  • Initiative reduces roadside confrontations and boosts law enforcement efficiency.

Commissioner Onoriode, while unveiling the system in Asaba, described it as a groundbreaking digital solution that brings transparency and safety to road governance. “This technology ensures compliance without chaos. It promotes discipline, reduces human interference, and enhances public trust in our traffic management process,” he said.

The system uses advanced high-resolution cameras positioned at strategic points to capture vehicle plates and cross-check them against national records. It flags vehicles with outdated documentation and assists in identifying cars linked to criminal activities.

The commissioner said the project aligns with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s vision of smart governance and digital transformation, positioning Delta among the few Nigerian states embracing artificial intelligence in public administration.

“This is not just a transport reform, it’s a public safety revolution,” Onoriode emphasized. “Our collaboration with federal agencies ensures data integrity and quick enforcement across multiple security platforms.”

The pilot phase currently operates in Asaba and Warri, with plans for a full-scale rollout across all 25 local government areas after a successful evaluation. Motorists have been advised to update their vehicle documentation to avoid penalties, as the system is fully automated and free from manual intervention.

Residents have praised the move, calling it a long-overdue step toward orderliness and safety on Delta roads. The initiative underscores the state government’s dedication to using technology as a catalyst for security, compliance, and sustainable development.
