Delta State has suspended two engineers in the state’s Ministry of Works over their alleged involvement in substandard project execution.
The suspension, follows a series of inspections that uncovered poorly executed infrastructural projects across various parts of the state, raising concerns about accountability and project supervision within the ministry.
The suspension of the two officials was announced on February 3, 2025, at a press briefing by the Commissioner for Works (Rural and Riverine) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, in Asaba, the state capital.
Mr. Aniagwu in expressing disappointment over the sub-standard work uncovered during the inspections, stressed the Governor Sheriff Oborevwori administration’s zero-tolerance stance on negligence and corruption.
He stated that the suspension of the engineers is part of ongoing efforts to ensure strict adherence to quality and standard in the execution of public projects, while reaffirming the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and the delivery of sustainable infrastructure for Deltans.
“As I speak to you, two of them are on suspension as of last week. In short, it’s just that the governor is being magnanimous.

“The intention ab initio is to sack them; a committee has been set up that is investigating them in line with the civil service rules and I can bet you that certain actions will be taken because they haven’t been able to answer the query given to them.
“They have admitted to the things that they were accused of and we are using them to show a minor example. But after that, anybody who thinks because we tempered mercy with justice and wants to progress along that line, then the full weight of what the civil service rules provide will be used on such a person.
“So, we are already showing examples with individuals. As I speak, those two engineers are on suspension and so that tells you that we are serious when we say value for money, we are not joking.
“Any engineer, any civil servant that connives with a contractor or that inadvertently makes us to lose money thereby vitiating our results to get value for money, that person will go in for it. And we mean it, irrespective of how highly placed, the governor, is very clear about it,” the commissioner added.
