The Delta State Government has prohibited the celebration of Valentine’s Day in all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state, directing school authorities to halt related activities with immediate effect.

The directive was conveyed in an official circular issued by the Ministry of Secondary Education Headquarters in Asaba and addressed to Chief Inspectors of Education, field offices of the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, as well as heads of public and private schools. The circular bears the title Abolition of Valentine Parties in Schools.

According to the ministry, the decision followed observations of widespread Valentine themed parties organised by students and, in some cases, teachers within school premises. The government stated that such activities have not contributed to academic excellence and may distract students from their studies.

The circular emphasised that students should channel their time and energy into productive academic pursuits. School authorities were urged to discourage activities that could create disruptions to teaching and learning.

Reiterating its commitment to educational standards, the state government stressed that it remains focused on strengthening and improving the quality of education. It noted that activities capable of undermining moral values and academic discipline would not be tolerated within school environments.

The directive clearly states that school heads, whether in public or private institutions, are prohibited from organising or permitting Valentine celebrations within their schools.

The circular was signed by Dr Kingsley Nze Ashibogwu, Justice of the Peace and Honourable Commissioner for Secondary Education.

The announcement has sparked conversations among parents, educators and students, with many schools already moving to comply as Valentine’s Day approaches.
