The Delta State Government has projected that reliable and steady electricity supply will be achieved in major parts of the state within the next 12 months, as it accelerates reforms aimed at transforming the power sector into a key driver of economic and industrial expansion.

The projection was made on Wednesday during a press briefing at Government House, Asaba, following a strategic engagement involving Power Acumen Consulting Limited, Details Solicitors, and the Nigeria Infrastructure Bank, and the Delta State Government, where a detailed implementation framework for power stability and sector-wide reforms was presented.

Speaking to journalists, the Delta State Commissioner for Energy, Engr. Michael Ifeanyi Anoka, said the administration is already implementing targeted interventions to strengthen existing electricity infrastructure and improve generation capacity across the state.

He explained that the government is placing strong emphasis on ensuring uninterrupted power supply, beginning with Asaba as a pilot location before extending improvements to other parts of Delta State.

Anoka further noted that the state is collaborating with international technical experts based in London, alongside key investment partners, to guarantee that the 12-month delivery target is realistically achieved and sustained over time.

Also, the Commissioner for Economic Planning, Mr Sonny Ekedaye, said the initiative—tagged the “Light Delta Initiative”—is anchored on a comprehensive reform agenda designed to resolve structural challenges in the electricity sector.

He disclosed that consultancy firms, including Amnesty Consulting and Dura Limited, were commissioned to conduct a full diagnostic review of the state’s power infrastructure and policy environment. According to him, the preliminary report has already highlighted critical gaps requiring urgent reforms, particularly in regulation and infrastructure modernisation
.

Ekedaye added that the government is considering the establishment of a State Electricity Commission to strengthen oversight, coordination, and accountability in the sector. He also stressed that while tariffs will remain affordable, a sustainable cost-recovery structure is necessary to ensure long-term viability.

Providing technical insight, Engr. Matthew Edevbie, Managing Director of Power Acumen Consulting Ltd, said the plan to achieve stable electricity within 12 months is both achievable and carefully structured.

He commended the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) for its readiness to support improved power delivery in key urban centres such as Asaba and Warri, describing it as a foundational step toward statewide expansion.

Edevbie explained that the broader reform strategy extends beyond immediate improvements, incorporating structural changes such as the development of an independent transmission network and a sub-national electricity market framework, which he described as a first-of-its-kind approach in Nigeria.

He also revealed plans to optimise existing generation facilities in Sapele and other locations, supported by the deployment of a 2KV transmission infrastructure to enhance efficient power evacuation and distribution.

According to him, stable electricity supply will significantly boost industrial activity, attract private investment, enable the establishment of technology hubs and industrial clusters, and strengthen the state’s economic base.

He further noted that the initiative is expected to generate employment opportunities, increase internally generated revenue, and position Delta State as a major industrial destination.

On funding, Edevbie stated that the project is backed by a viable financing strategy capable of attracting both public and private capital, stressing that transparency, accountability, and efficient revenue management will be critical to its long-term success.
