The Young Nigerian Rights Organization and its lead activist, Comrade Victor Ojei, popularly known as Wong Box Nigeria, have threatened to sue the Delta State Police Command and its Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, for alleged defamation and misconduct.

It would be recalled that on August 29, 2025, the Delta State Police Command issued a statement, in which the police declared Ojei wanted for allegedly jumping bail.

In that release, the police alleged that Ojei attacked officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) with a cutlass after they disconnected his residence in Asaba over an outstanding electricity bill of about ₦4.8 million.

However, in a statement issued on Sunday, the group accused Edafe of publishing a false post on social media, claiming that there was a manhunt for the activist.

According to Ojei, the post was a “deliberate fabrication” intended to damage his reputation.

He explained that on the day the alleged manhunt was announced, he was physically present at the State Intelligence Department with the assistant commissioner of police and SP Edafe, awaiting to meet the deputy commissioner of police.

“This was not only false, but a calculated attempt to damage my reputation, integrity, and standing in society,” Ojei said.

The activist and his group said they would issue a pre-action notice to the state police command and subsequently approach the court to enforce his fundamental rights and demand compensation for defamation.

They further accused SP Edafe of unprofessional conduct, alleging that he had personalized issues against Ojei because of previous criticisms of the state police command over alleged brutality and abuse of citizens.

The group also alleged corruption within the Delta State Police Command, claiming that the command had mishandled petitions against both Edafe and a divisional police officer by diverting them away from the commissioner of police’s office to divisions.

The organization called on the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to set up a disciplinary committee to investigate the allegations of misconduct, address corruption within the command, and restore professionalism in police operations.

“We will continue to expose these corrupt practices and call for accountability. Nigerians deserve a police force that upholds the law, not one that manipulates the truth to destroy reputations,” Ojei added.

The rights group said more revelations about alleged misconduct within the Delta State Police Command would be forwarded to the inspector general of police in due course.
