Delta State has announced that it will immediately begin reclaiming government-owned lands that were illegally acquired by land grabbers across the state.

The state government’s plan was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Kingsley Emu.

The statement warned residents and the public to stop all forms of illegal occupation or construction on such lands.

Emu said that the state government had issued several warnings in the past through different channels, but many people ignored them.

He stated that the reclaimed lands are meant for major development projects that will benefit the public, such as the Asaba International Airport and the Delta Free Trade Zone.

The SSG emphasized that illegal structures are getting in the way of these important projects.

“One major concern is the illegal construction on the land meant for the perimeter road around the Asaba airport.

“The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had directed that the road be constructed to meet safety standards. However, illegal buildings have made this difficult.

“The risk to public safety is huge,” Emu warned. “If this continues, the airport could be downgraded or even shut down, which will affect the state’s economy and movement of people.”

To remedy the situation, he said the state government has formed an enforcement team that will demolish all illegal structures, no matter how far along they are in construction.

“This is just one step, as the government may also take legal action against violators,” Emu added, stressing that the government must act to protect public property and ensure development plans are not hindered.

“If you or your family is building on land without proper government approval, you could lose it. The government is serious this time.

“They’re not only tearing down illegal buildings but may also take people to court. It’s better to check with authorities before starting any building project,” he advised.
