The Delta State Government has reassured residents of its unwavering support as floodwaters continue to rise, threatening coastal communities across the state. In a bid to protect vulnerable citizens, the government has taken swift action, establishing Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps and rolling out comprehensive relief measures.

Speaking on behalf of the Governor, Chief Press Secretary Sir Festus Ahon made this commitment during a live broadcast in Asaba. He emphasized Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s dedication to ensuring the safety and welfare of all residents, in line with the administration’s M.O.R.E. Agenda.

“The government remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard lives and provide support to flood victims,” Ahon said. “We strongly urge residents in flood-prone areas to relocate to safer locations, as the state has made adequate arrangements to accommodate them.”

In response to the imminent danger, Governor Oborevwori swiftly established a high-powered Flood Management Committee, chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu. The committee has been working tirelessly to alert residents in vulnerable communities and ensure their safe relocation.

To provide immediate relief, IDP camps have been set up in key locations, including Asaba, Kwale, Patani, Ozoro, and Otu-Jeremi. These camps are equipped with essential amenities such as food supplies, electricity, clean water, and medical services. Educational provisions have also been made to ensure that displaced schoolchildren can continue their studies without disruption.

The Flood Management Committee, in collaboration with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has been visiting at-risk communities to raise awareness and encourage relocation.

“As a responsible government, we have left no stone unturned in making sure that all necessary resources are in place to protect and care for our people,” Ahon added. “We will not abandon any resident in this critical time. Our commitment to safeguarding lives and property is unwavering.”
