The Delta State Government has begun legal proceedings against two men accused of the murder of retired Justice Ifeoma Okogwu, with the case formally opened at the Delta State High Court in Asaba.

The suspects, identified as Godwin Mngumi, 25, and Nnaji Abalum, were brought before the court on Tuesday, facing a four-count charge that includes armed robbery, conspiracy, and murder. The alleged offences reportedly occurred on November 27, 2025, at the residence of the late judge in Asaba.

Justice Okogwu, a former member of the Delta State Judiciary, was killed in her home in an incident that sparked public outrage and heightened concerns over security within the state.

At the hearing, the prosecution, led by the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, alongside the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Justice, Omamuzo Erebe, SAN, told the court that investigations into the case had been concluded. The team noted that law enforcement authorities had completed their part and expressed readiness to proceed with prosecution.

They reiterated the state government’s resolve to ensure justice is served, stressing its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while taking a firm stance against violent crime.

The defendants were represented by their counsel, including the Director of Public Defender, Ernest Edomwonyi, and E. I. Opiah. Both men pleaded not guilty to the charges when they were read in court.

The presiding judge subsequently adjourned the case to April 14, 2026, when the prosecution is expected to begin presenting its case and calling witnesses.
