Delta State, the government has urged certified engineers to uphold standards, quality control and professionalism in the execution of public infrastructure projects. The call came from the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Prince Johnson Erijo, during a courtesy visit by members of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Asaba branch.

Speaking at the Government House in Asaba, Hon. Erijo emphasized the need for engineers in the state’s civil service to uphold the integrity of their profession by ensuring that all projects supervised by Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) meet specified standards. He warned against the growing trend of compromised project certification, where some engineers approve substandard jobs for payment, labeling such acts as not only unprofessional but deeply unpatriotic.

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, according to the Chief of Staff, remains passionate about delivering value for money through durable, world-class infrastructure, which makes the role of engineers in maintaining standards more critical than ever.

To reinforce accountability within the profession, Erijo urged the NSE leadership to establish internal monitoring systems capable of disciplining erring members. He noted that a stronger ethical framework would help curb the temptation to cut corners, particularly on high-budget projects that shape public perception and impact lives.

He commended the engineers for acknowledging the developmental strides of the Oborevwori-led administration and for their continued technical input in the state’s construction sector. Stressing the importance of capacity building, Erijo called for constant training and retraining of engineers to keep them aligned with global innovations, emerging technologies, and best practices in engineering.

Earlier, the Chairman of the NSE, Asaba branch, Engr. Ikechukwu Osunde, said the Society is committed to raising the bar of professionalism and ethical conduct among its members. He described the NSE as the umbrella body for engineering in Nigeria, providing structured programs and regular engagement to equip engineers with the tools needed to meet modern challenges.

Engr. Osunde also lauded Governor Oborevwori’s MORE Agenda, stating that it has already redefined governance in Delta State and garnered national recognition. He praised the Governor’s commitment to infrastructure, education, healthcare, and social investment, noting that the administration’s support for engineering professionals remains a cornerstone of its developmental blueprint.

The visit highlighted a shared vision between the state government and the NSE to build a Delta that thrives on innovation, professionalism, and durable public works.
