Delta State has earmark ₦1.3 billion as counterpart funding for erosion control in Okpanam community, Oshimili North Local Government Area of the state.
The member representing Oshimili North Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, Frank Esenwa, disclosed that the state Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has already approved the expenditure.
The affected areas include Amachai, Ogbeozoma, Ogbe Ojie, and the Vanguard Area, which have suffered significant damage due to gully erosion.
Esenwa made this disclosure during the inaugural edition of Okpanam Heritage Day, held in Okpanam, Oshimili North Local Government Area.
Speaking at the event, Esenwa highlighted the importance of the community’s cosmopolitan nature and acknowledged the contributions of non-indigenous residents to the town’s development.
He also shared updates on infrastructural improvements, revealing plans to deploy 400 streetlights within the community, while pledging to maintain quality representation for his constituents.
The traditional ruler of Okpanam, Dr. Michael Ogbolu, emphasized that the heritage day was organized not only to celebrate the town’s rich cultural heritage but also to demonstrate its hospitality and inclusiveness.
He commended the event organizers, including the President-General of Okpanam Youth Organization, Comr. Lucky Okolo, and the President-General of Okpanam Community Development Union, Mr. Robert Ogonenwe, for their efforts in showcasing the community’s identity.

In separate remarks, Chief Felix Okafor, the Ikejani of Okpanam Kingdom and Prince Augustine Onokwai, the Asagba of Umuidigbe Ocha, lauded the importance of the event as a platform to display the community’s unity and diversity.
Chief Okafor noted the event’s inclusivity, with participants drawn from across the country, while expressing gratitude to Gov. Oborevwori for addressing Okpanam’s erosion challenges.
President-General of Okpanam Community Development Union, Mr. Robert Ogonenwe, and the Chairman of the Organizing Committee, Innocent Uchbuolu, extended their appreciation to those who contributed to the success of the celebration.
The event was graced by several dignitaries, including Ngozi Okolie, the member representing Aniocha/Oshimili Constituency in the House of Representatives, as well as prominent sons and daughters of the community.
