The Delta State Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda S. Olufemi, PSC, has called on 250 vigilantes, anti-cult volunteers, and hunters selected for training in Warri South Local Government Area to prioritize the safety and security of their communities. Speaking during the flag-off ceremony in Warri, CP Olufemi reminded the participants that their new roles are a “call to service” and not an opportunity to oppress the very people they are meant to protect.

Highlighting the rigorous process behind the selection and training, CP Olufemi emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards. He noted that the program would undergo periodic reviews every one to two years, ensuring that those who fail to meet the requirements are replaced by more qualified individuals.

The event also featured remarks from the Chairman of Warri South Local Government Area, Comr. Agbateyiniro Weyinmi Isaac. He commended the improved security situation in Warri South and Uvwie Local Government Areas during the festive months, attributing the progress to collaborative efforts. “Security and welfare remain the government’s primary responsibilities,” he said, explaining the need for thorough profiling and documentation of vigilante members to prevent impersonation and enhance accountability.

Comr. Agbateyiniro outlined the comprehensive training curriculum designed to transform the volunteers into effective security operatives. Upon completion, participants will receive certificates and ID cards to formalize their roles and establish a system of accountability. “If any member is found wanting, their certificate and ID card will be revoked,” he added.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Graham Imade, further elaborated on the meticulous screening process. According to ACP Imade, a dedicated committee reviewed and approved the selection of 250 participants, ensuring only qualified individuals made the cut. He announced that the training program would commence on Monday, December 16, at the Egbokodo Multi-Purpose Hall in Warri, beginning with a three-day orientation on the principles of community vigilance.
