The Delta State House of Assembly has passed the Delta State Special Offences Amendment Bill into law, a move aimed at bolstering the fight against gender based violence and child abuse in the state.
The bill, if signed into law by the governor, will enhance the state’s legal framework for addressing cases under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Law of 2020 and the Child Rights Law of 2008.
It also aims to create a special offences court, which will expedite the handling of these sensitive cases.
The motion for the bill’s passage was moved by House Majority Leader, Emeka Nwaobi, and seconded by Spencer Ohwofa, who represents the Ughelli North State Constituency II.

Following its passage, Speaker Emomotimi Guwor commended the lawmakers for their careful and thorough examination of each clause of the bill, which facilitated the swift processing of the bill.
“This bill demonstrates Delta State’s zero tolerance for gender-based violence and child abuse,” Speaker Guwor remarked.
He praised the assembly for taking a strong stance to protect vulnerable groups and address crimes affecting the safety and rights of residents across the state.
The newly amended law will empower authorities to tackle various crimes under the existing legislation, promoting a safer environment for all residents, especially women and children.
