The Delta State House of Assembly on Monday approved the 2026 Appropriation Bill, pegging the state’s budget at N1.729 trillion for the coming fiscal year.

The approved figure represents an increase of N65.6 billion over the N1.664 trillion budget earlier presented to the House by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori about two weeks ago.

A breakdown of the budget shows that N500 billion was allocated to recurrent expenditure, while N1.229 trillion was earmarked for capital projects, reflecting the legislature’s emphasis on infrastructure and development-driven spending.

The bill was passed after the House considered and adopted the report of the Committee on Finance and Appropriations, presented at plenary by its Chairman, Marylin Okowa-Daramola (Ika North-East).

The session was presided over by the Speaker, Emomotimi Guwor (Warri South West).

The motion for the third reading and final passage of the bill was moved by the Leader of the House, Emeka Nwaobi (Aniocha North), and seconded by the Deputy Speaker, Arthur Akpowowo (Ethiope East).

Speaking after the passage, Speaker Guwor described the approval of the 2026 budget as a major legislative milestone, noting that it fulfilled the assembly’s constitutional responsibility under Section 121 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

According to him, the passage of the budget underscores the strong working relationship between the executive and legislative arms of government and reflects a shared commitment to the development of Delta State.

He said the assembly’s scrutiny ensured that the “Budget of Accelerating the MORE Agenda” remains people-oriented, inclusive and sustainable, while providing the necessary legal backing for the governor to implement his policies and programmes in 2026.

Guwor commended Gov. Oborevwori for his development vision and also praised lawmakers for their diligence and cooperation, noting that the House worked efficiently to deliver a comprehensive and forward-looking financial plan for the state.
