A prominent figure in Delta State’s All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Tonye Timi, has issued a stark warning to the party’s leadership, urging immediate unity and strategic rebuilding ahead of the 2025 elections. Without decisive action, Timi cautioned, the APC risks political irrelevance in the state.

In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday, Dr. Timi, a former representative of Patani Constituency in the Delta State House of Assembly, emphasized that electoral success cannot be achieved through wishful thinking or divine intervention. According to him, the proverbial “Godot” will not arrive to rescue the party or fix the political system. Instead, he stressed the need for strategic organization, active planning, and collective action to restore the party’s strength.

Dr. Timi criticized the disarray and internal conflicts within the Delta APC, describing the current situation as a betrayal of the fundamental principles that define the purpose and role of political parties. He pointed out that infighting and acrimony have left the party vulnerable, making it difficult to challenge the dominant Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State.“The Delta APC faces a clear choice: remain mired in chaos or rebuild into a formidable political force,” he said. “Waiting for salvation from external forces is futile. Power in politics is never handed over; it must be contested and won. If the party fails to unite and refocus, it risks becoming permanently irrelevant. The time to build is now.”

Dr. Timi further called for repentance, forgiveness, and restoration among APC members to strengthen the party’s foundation. He highlighted the critical role political parties play in a democracy, serving as platforms for candidates, policy articulation, and decision-making. Without unity, he warned, a political party loses its essence and influence.

Unlike pressure groups that champion specific causes, political parties aim for comprehensive control of governance through elections. Timi stressed that shared goals and ideologies should unite party members in their quest to influence policy and governance.

As a seasoned politician, he also underscored the importance of opposition parties in a democratic system. He noted that effective opposition holds the government accountable, critiques policies, and provides credible alternatives.

“The role of an opposition party is not just to oppose but to enrich democratic governance,” he stated. “A strong opposition prevents authoritarianism, ensures transparency, and fosters public debate while preparing for future leadership.”

Dr. Timi’s passionate appeal to the Delta APC underscores the urgent need for unity and strategic planning as the 2025 elections approach. His call serves as both a warning and a roadmap for the party to reclaim its relevance and compete effectively in the political landscape.
