The Defence Headquarters has acknowledged media reports and public speculation about the presence or the deployment of U.S. troops in the country.
The acknowledgement of the presence of U.S. troops was contained in a statement signed by Major General Samaila Uba, Director of Defence Information, on January 5, 2026.
The Defence Headquarters emphasized that Nigeria has a long-established and structured security partnership with the United States, that is based on mutual respect.
It explained that the partnership focuses on capacity building, military education, intelligence sharing, logistical support, and strategic dialogue to address common security challenges, including terrorism and transnational threats.
These activities, the statement said are conducted with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and in line with existing bilateral agreements.
“Recently, a two-day high-level working group meeting took place, bringing together senior officials from the U.S. government and their Nigerian counterparts at the office of the national security adviser.
“This meeting followed previous discussions in the United States and reflects a mature, trust-based relationship aimed at achieving practical results,” Uba said in the statement.

He added that the discussions included proposals to enhance existing cooperation mechanisms, improve coordination, and increase accountability in joint efforts to combat violent threats, while ensuring the protection of civilians and community safety.
“These proposals are currently under review by the relevant Nigerian authorities.
“Engagements with international partners are strictly guided by national interests, measurable outcomes, and the safeguarding of Nigeria’s sovereignty,” he said.
The Defence Headquarters assured that Nigeria’s defense partnerships are transparent, policy-driven, and align with constitutional provisions.
It declared that the military remain fully committed to protecting the nation’s territorial integrity, while collaborating with credible partners in ways that strengthen Nigeria’s security framework without compromising national independence.
