The Deeper Life Bible Church has called for fair compensation and official protection following the demolition of its building located at 36 Aina Street, Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos. The structure was pulled down on May 27 by operatives of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), sparking outrage among members and raising concerns over the legality and motive behind the action.
Speaking to journalists in Lagos, the church’s spokesperson, Mr. Taiwo Kupolati, expressed deep concern about the sudden demolition, which he claimed lacked proper legal backing and transparency. He revealed that the church community was shocked by the act, and believes the ₦10 million compensation reportedly offered by the local government falls far below the true value of the property.
Kupolati stressed that the church is not only demanding a fair and professional valuation of the demolished building, but also requesting to be relocated to a nearby site to continue worship services without interruption. He added that worshippers have remained committed despite the challenges and are determined to uphold their right to worship peacefully on the land, pending full resolution.
To ensure the safety and security of members, Kupolati disclosed that the church has contacted the Acting Inspector-General of Police, seeking protection against any form of harassment or further threats during their ongoing activities on the disputed land.

He emphasized that the church prefers a peaceful resolution through legal and administrative channels, but suspects the demolition may have been influenced by prior interest shown in the land by certain local government elements.
Reacting to the controversy, Lagos State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, clarified that the state government was not involved in the demolition. He insisted that Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration holds the Deeper Life Church in high regard and values religious freedom, fairness, and the rule of law.
Omotoso further disclosed that negotiations are already underway between the church and government representatives. He noted that the governor’s Special Adviser on Religious Matters is actively engaging with church leaders to reach a mutually acceptable resolution.
