Honourable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, has charged the Super Falcons of Nigeria to put their records in the Women’s African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) behind as they kickstart the campaign for their 10th title.

Mr Dare, who spoke to Super Falcons of Nigeria that are preparing for their Group C match at the 12th WAFCON against Bayana Bayana of South Africa on July 4, charged them to victory that eventually cements their dominance in the African continent.

While the Super Falcons take on South Africa in their Group C opener, whom they defeated in 2018 final to lift their 9th trophy in Ghana, Mr Dare added that the nine-time WAFCON champions must show discipline and
temerity as they surge towards their tenth WAFCON glory.

In a statement released by the Sports Ministry, Mr Dare said, “put your past record of successes in the tournament behind you and fight with temerity, discipline and purpose to pick the tenth title which will cement Nigeria’s dominance in women’s football on the continent.” The Trumpet Gathered

Super Falcons after their match against the Bayana Bayana of South Africa will take on Botswana on Thursday, July 7 before tackling Burundi on Sunday, July 10 in their Group C matches.

Meanwhile, South Africa are upbeat to defeat Nigeria as they search for their maiden WAFCON title after being runners-up on five occasions, three of which were in the hands of the Super Falcons.

According to Bayana Bayana gaffer, Desiree Ellis, the team will ensure they get a positive result against the Super Falcons to herald their campaign for their first WAFCON title triumph.

“We have to make sure we get a positive result from the first match because that will set the tone for the rest of the tournament,” Ellis told Times Live.

“It will also be naive of us to go to the tournament and not set a goal of winning it. I think we will be no different from any other country in wanting to win it.

“We’ve been runners-up five times and 2018 was really the closest. The time we really need to step up and make sure we get that gold medal is now, but we must not underestimate any team in our group,” she stated.

There is a long-standing rivalry between Super Falcons and Bayana Bayana, dating back to 1995 when the former triumphed over the latter to win their second title of the WAFCON event to become the lone qualifier from the African continent in the 1995 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Sweden.
