A fresh wave of tension is unfolding within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as the party’s leadership suspended its National Vice Chairman for the South-South region and former Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Uguru Usani, with immediate effect.
According to the party, the action became necessary following what it described as conduct that threatens the peace, unity, and progress of the ADC both in Cross River State and across the South-South region.
The decision was reached during a meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC) of the ADC, Cross River Chapter, held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the party’s State Publicity Secretary, James Otudor, the ADC explained that ADC suspends vice chairman Usani after several petitions accused him of activities contrary to the party’s constitution.
Otudor revealed that the SWC deliberated extensively on reports alleging anti-party behavior, insubordination to constituted authority, and actions capable of damaging the ADC’s image and electoral chances in the state.
“In accordance with the provisions of our party constitution and disciplinary procedures, Dr. Usani’s suspension remains in place pending a detailed investigation by the appropriate committees,” the statement read.
The committee also raised concerns about the appointment of Ms. Jackie Wayas as Deputy National Publicity Secretary, faulting the process for lacking proper consultation with the state leadership.
It noted that Wayas had not been actively engaging with the Cross River State chapter since her appointment, and her perceived lack of cooperation was said to be affecting the unity and growth of the ADC in the state.
“Consequently, the SWC urged the National Working Committee to revisit her appointment and consider replacing her with a more credible, committed, and media-oriented member from Cross River State who aligns with the ideals of the ADC,” the statement added.

Furthermore, the Cross River ADC expressed displeasure over some individuals under the Coalition Movement who publicly declared their intention to join the ADC but have yet to formalize their membership months later.
“While we acknowledge that party registration is an ongoing process, the ADC will not allow dual membership or tolerate individuals using its platform while pursuing interests in other political parties,” the statement warned.
The SWC also observed that some coalition members who previously attended ADC strategy meetings have since accepted caretaker or leadership roles in their former parties.
All coalition members and intending members were therefore directed to complete their registration at the ward level within seven days, ending Saturday, October 25, 2025 or risk losing their eligibility for leadership or decision-making roles within the party.
Reiterating its position, the Cross River leadership maintained that ADC suspends vice chairman Usani in line with due process, assuring that the ongoing investigation will be fair, transparent, and in compliance with the party’s constitution.
“We call on all members to remain calm, law-abiding, and committed as the party’s internal mechanisms for justice and accountability take full effect,” the statement concluded.
As the controversy deepens, party leaders emphasized that ADC suspends vice chairman Usani to preserve its internal discipline and safeguard the unity of the opposition coalition in Cross River State.
