In a dramatic turn of events, a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has slammed the brakes on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) South-South Zonal Congress, issuing an interim injunction that halts the highly anticipated election.
The ruling, delivered by Justice G.V. Obomanu, also restrains the suspended PDP National Vice Chairman (South-South), Dan Orbih, from participating in any activities related to the congress, originally scheduled for February 22, 2025, in Calabar, Cross River State.
The court’s decision followed legal arguments presented by the claimants’ counsel, Emeka D.A. Ojoko, who urged the court to prevent the PDP and Orbih from proceeding with the congress amid ongoing internal disputes.

Justice Obomanu upheld the request, ordering all parties to suspend any preparations until the hearing and determination of the Motion on Notice for Interlocutory Injunction.
Further tightening the legal grip, the court instructed all involved parties to maintain the status quo as of February 20, 2025.
It also authorized the claimants to serve legal documents on PDP and Orbih through substituted means, including posting notices at the PDP South-South Zonal Headquarters in Port Harcourt and publishing the court order in a widely circulated national newspaper.
This ruling sends shockwaves through the PDP’s internal political structure in the South-South, throwing the party’s leadership and electoral process into uncertainty.
The case is set for a crucial hearing on February 28, 2025, where the fate of the zonal congress and Orbih’s role in the party will be further debated in court.
