The Akwa Ibom State High Court in Uyo has sentenced a former soldier, Corporal Stephen Iweh, to death by hanging for the murder of a traveler who had given him a lift.
Iweh, who was previously a member of the Nigerian Army’s 6 Battalion in Ibagwa, Abak, was found guilty of the crime.
In his ruling, Justice Nkanang stated that “the evidence against the accused is overwhelming, and the court cannot turn a blind eye to the heinous nature of this crime.”

He further remarked on the need for justice to be served, not only for the victim, Christopher Jimmy but also as a deterrent to others who might consider similar acts of violence.
Iweh was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and an additional 10 years for the robbery, with the sentences to run concurrently.
The court also ordered that the stolen vehicle be returned to the victim’s family, if recovered.
The judgment was met with relief by the victim’s family, who expressed hope that the ruling would bring them some measure of closure.
