A High Court in Maiduguri, Borno State, has sentenced Abdulrahman Mallam to six months imprisonment for providing false information to authorities.
The case was heard on Thursday, April 2, 2026, before Justice Aisha Kumaliya, following Mallam’s arraignment by the Maiduguri Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Mallam faced a one-count charge for knowingly giving false information. According to the prosecution, between October 24, 2025, and March 2026, he submitted written statements to EFCC operatives, Alex Mbu Anjor and Sadiq Danjuma Junior, falsely presenting himself as a civil servant with the Borno State Ministry of Youth and Sport Poverty Alleviation, as well as a retired officer, while attempting to act as a surety.
The offence violates Section 39(2)(a) of the EFCC Establishment Act, 2024, and is punishable under Section 39(2)(b) of the same Act.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge. Following the plea, prosecuting counsel S.O. Saka urged the court to convict him, while defence counsel A.B. Dikwa appealed for leniency, citing his client’s remorse.

Justice Kumaliya subsequently sentenced Mallam to six months in prison, with an option of a N50,000 fine.
The court noted that the offence occurred during an attempt by the defendant to stand as a surety at the EFCC’s Maiduguri Zonal Directorate, Bank Fraud Unit.
In a separate case, the EFCC also arraigned Ibrahim Mohammed Tungushe before the same court on charges of criminal misappropriation.
Tungushe is accused of diverting ₦1,250,000, being proceeds from the sale of 100 cartons of Indomie instant noodles belonging to one Bukar Babakura. He allegedly obtained the goods under the pretext of selling them and remitting the proceeds within 24 hours.
The charges are said to contravene Sections 296 and 297 of the Borno State Penal Code Law.
The defendant pleaded not guilty. The prosecution requested a trial date and asked the court to remand him in custody.
Justice Kumaliya adjourned the matter to April 16, 2026, for trial and ordered that Tungushe be remanded at the Maiduguri Maximum Custodial Centre.
Further investigations revealed that Tungushe neither returned the goods nor paid the proceeds to the owner.
