A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to human rights activist, Olamide Thomas, setting the bail amount at N10 million under strict conditions.
The ruling delivered by Justice Emeka Nwite, made on Monday, requires Olamide to provide one surety on the same amount.
She is being tried on charges of allegedly insulting President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi and high-ranking police officials, including the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, through a viral social media post.
The case registered as suit number F/HE/ARS/CR/636/2024, lists the inspector general of police as the complainant.

Olamide’s legal team, consisting of Dr. S. M. Oyeghe and J. A. Ekwe, successfully argued for the bail, with the prosecution absent during the proceedings.
Justice Nwite noted that there is no evidence indicating that the defendant will jump bail.
The bail conditions also stipulate that the surety must present a three-year tax clearance certificate, must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and submit two recent passport photographs along with an affidavit of means.
Additionally, the court has mandated that the surety’s address be verified. The trial is set to resume on February 18, 2025.
