A fatal car accident in Abuja has claimed the lives of a couple and two suspected carjackers after an attempted vehicle hijack went wrong along the busy Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway by Mabushi Underbridge.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command, in a statement issued on Wednesday, confirmed that the incident occurred around 1:30 p.m. on September 3, 2025.
According to preliminary police findings, a grey Toyota Highlander with registration number ABJ 206 EC, driven by Emeka Ehekweme with his wife as a passenger, was forcefully intercepted near Berger Junction, Utako, by three unidentified men.
The assailants reportedly overpowered the couple and managed to force their way into the vehicle. In the struggle for control of the steering, the SUV rammed into a parked Mazda car before somersaulting and slamming into a bridge pillar.

Police spokesperson Josephine Adeh disclosed that the driver, his wife, and two of the suspects were confirmed dead on arrival at the National Hospital, Abuja. The third suspect is said to be receiving medical treatment under security watch.
The driver of the Mazda, identified as Suleman Mohammed, narrowly escaped death, sustaining only minor injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
“The Command commiserates with the families of the deceased and assures the public of a thorough investigation to ascertain the facts of the matter,” Adeh said.
The incident has triggered concerns among Abuja residents about the rising cases of violent carjackings and criminal activity within the FCT despite repeated police assurances of improved security.
Police have launched an investigation to uncover the identities of the suspects and the motive behind the botched hijack.
