The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been actively targeting illegal oil refineries, leading to a significant increase in the country’s oil production, which is now at 1.71 million barrels per day in the Niger Delta region.
This information was shared by Group Capt. Abdulafeez Opaleye, who is in charge of air operations for a military initiative called Operation Delta Safe. During a recent briefing at the NAF Headquarters in Abuja, he highlighted the effectiveness of their ongoing air strikes, which aim to disrupt oil theft across seven states in the Niger Delta.
Opaleye explained that their operations have resulted in the neutralization of 12 individuals involved in these illegal activities, the arrest of six suspects, and the destruction of makeshift refineries, including tanks and storage areas used for illegal operations.
From May to August, the NAF conducted surveillance missions and patrols in states including Ondo, Edo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River. Each mission not only targeted criminals but also aimed to discourage oil theft, making it riskier and less appealing for those involved.

Thanks to these efforts, oil production is showing positive results. In July 2025, the country produced an average of 1.71 million barrels per day, including a significant portion of crude oil.
Additionally, the NAF has reported executing over 100 missions and flying almost 200 hours within this timeframe. They used a substantial amount of fuel for their operations and successfully destroyed many illegal refining setups.
The Chief of Training and Operations at NAF, Air Vice Marshal Francis Edosa, emphasized that these targeted air operations not only improve security in the region but also provide economic benefits to the country. He assured that the NAF is dedicated to continuing their work to stabilize the Niger Delta area, protect oil revenue, and ensure that the skies remain safe for legitimate businesses while being hostile to illegal activities.
