COAS Lt. Gen. Waidi Shaibu approves major shake-up in Nigerian Army leadership

The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, has announced a sweeping redeployment of senior officers across key command, staff, and instructional positions in the Nigerian Army, in a move aimed at strengthening leadership, enhancing efficiency, and boosting operational performance nationwide.

According to a statement by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Lt. Col. Appolonia Anele, the new appointments are part of ongoing efforts to reposition the Army for greater combat readiness and improved strategic coordination.

Among the major postings, Major General Bamidele Alabi has been appointed Chief of Policy and Plans (Army) at the Army Headquarters, while Major General Jamal Abdulsalam has been redeployed to the Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Operations. Major General Peter Mala now heads the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) in Minna, following his transfer from the Office of the National Security Adviser.

Major General Samson Jiya has been moved from the Nigerian Army Heritage and Future Centre to the Defence Headquarters as Chief of Defence Accounts and Budget. Also affected is Major General Mayirenso Saraso, who now serves as Chief of Operations (Army), and Major General Isa Abdullahi, who assumes the role of Chief of Administration (Army).

In another round of high-level reshuffles, Major General Musa Etsu-Ndagi becomes Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, while Major General Abubakar Haruna takes over as Commander of the Nigerian Army Training Centre (NATRAC), Kontagora. Major General Philip Ilodibia has been appointed Chief of Defence Space Administration.

At the corps level, Major General Godwin Mutkut, formerly with the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) in N’Djamena, is now Corps Commander Infantry, while Major General Umar Abubakar takes command of the Nigerian Army Armour Corps. Major General John Adeyemo has been appointed Corps Commander Artillery, and Major General Mohammed Abdullahi will now lead the Nigerian Army Signals Corps.

Major General Taofik Sidick assumes duty as Chief of Accounts and Budget (Army), Major General Abdullahi Ibrahim now heads the Ordnance Corps, and Major General Adeyinka Adereti becomes Corps Commander Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Major General Nansak Shagaya takes over as Corps Commander Supply and Transport, while Brigadier General Yusha’u Ahmed becomes Acting Corps Commander Education.

In the training institutions, Major General Oluyemi Olatoye has been appointed Commandant of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna. Major General Emmanuel Mustapha moves to the Nigerian Army Signal School as Commandant, Major General Adamu Hassan becomes Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of Artillery, and Brigadier General John Bulus now leads the Nigerian Army School of Finance and Accounts.

Among the new field commanders, Major General Saidu Audu takes charge as Force Commander, MNJTF, N’Djamena; Major General Warrah Idris assumes command of the Joint Task Force North West, Operation Fatan Yamma; and Major General Oluremi Fadairo becomes General Officer Commanding 82 Division, Enugu, as well as Commander of the Joint Task Force South East, Operation Udoka.

The COAS also appointed Major General Olatokumbo Bello as Director of Defence Media Operations, while Brigadier General Samaila Uba was named Director of Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters.

Lieutenant General Shaibu charged the newly appointed officers to apply their experience and professionalism in advancing the Nigerian Army’s mission to safeguard the nation’s unity and territorial integrity. He urged them to sustain the current operational tempo, strengthen interagency synergy, and uphold the Army’s core values of loyalty, selfless service, integrity, and excellence.

The new postings take immediate effect.
