The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has expressed concern over the political crisis in Rivers State, cautioning President Bola Tinubu against allowing the actions of Nyesom Wike to exacerbate tension in the region.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, the CNG expressed concern over Wike’s alleged opportunism, which they claim is fueling chaos and discord in Rivers State.
The group warned that Wike’s self-serving actions risk dragging the nation and its judicial system into disrepute, both domestically and internationally.
The CNG’s statement comes just 48 hours after President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State.
National Coordinator of the CNG, Jamilu Charanchi, emphasised the need for Tinubu to exercise caution and avoid being swayed by Wike’s provocations.
“Wike’s deranged opportunism must not overshadow the president’s sense of reasoning and judgment,” Charanchi stated. “The President must prioritize dialogue and unity over confrontation to prevent further escalation.”
The CNG also highlighted Wike’s controversial role during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan, noting that his actions contributed to the political challenges of that era.
The group urged Tinubu to remain vigilant and avoid aligning himself with individuals whose past actions have raised concerns.

The CNG called on all stakeholders, including civil society organisations, political leaders, and citizens, to prioritize peace and democratic governance.
It urged Tinubu to resist Wike’s opportunistic politics and focus on fostering unity, and addressing the underlying grievances fueling discontent in the region.
“The world awaits decisive actions that will reflect Tinubu’s commitment to effective governance and the broader aspirations of the Nigerian populace,” the statement concluded.
The CNG’s warning underscores the growing tension in Rivers State and the broader Niger Delta, as the nation grapples with the fall-out from Wike’s political activities.
The group reiterated its readiness to support initiatives aimed at restoring peace and promoting the welfare of all Nigerians.
