The contentious visa situation involving the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria has been addressed, countering assertions regarding Nigerian athletes’ inability to compete in the Guangzhou World Athletics Relays due to delays in the application procedure.
The embassy clarified that while the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) claimed to have pulled out of the event over visa complications, it refutes this assertion.
It was noted that the embassy received a request for help with visa applications on April 24, and it promptly guided Nigeria’s National Sports Commission in assembling the necessary documentation.
The embassy obtained the application materials by May 6 and fast-tracked the visa approval process, finalizing it by May 8.
The embassy emphasized its ongoing support for inter-personal and sports collaborations between China and Nigeria and highlighted its provision of efficient and expert aid with visa applications.
It attributed the athletes’ absence from the competition to inadequate time for processing, rather than an intentional hold-up.
Additionally, the embassy expressed regret over the outcome and reiterated its dedication to fostering amicable exchanges between China and Nigeria, expressing its readiness to continue offering support and assistance for collaborations across various sectors, including sports.
This situation illustrates the critical need for effective planning and communication in global sports events.
