In a disturbing case of child abuse, an Enugu State magistrate court has ordered the remand of Mrs Ada Ogbogu, accused of brutally assaulting her three-year-old stepson, Kaitobechukwu, with a pestle and pouring hot water on him, resulting in severe injuries.
During the court proceedings on Tuesday, police authorities presented child abuse charges against Mrs. Ogbogu, accusing her of inflicting grievous bodily harm, an offense punishable by life imprisonment if convicted. The charge, marked CME/646C/2024, details the horrific incident that occurred on October 23, 2024, at Ike Ani Estate, Emene, Enugu. According to the charge sheet, Mrs Ogbogu allegedly poured hot water on the child’s face and struck him with a pestle, causing a dislocated leg and severe bodily injuries.
Chief Magistrate Alphonsus Edeh denied Mrs Ogbogu’s bail request, ordering her remand at the Correctional Centre. The child abuse case has been adjourned until November 26, 2024, awaiting further recommendations from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
