The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has congratulated the Roman Catholic Church following the election of Pope Leo XIV.
In a statement released on Friday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh expressed that this historic moment brings joy to Catholics around the globe.
He emphasized that the arrival of Pope Leo XIV symbolizes a fresh start and hope for the Catholic Church.
”The emergence of Pope Leo XIV signifies renewal and hope for the Catholic Church,” he said, adding ”CAN is confident that the new Pontiff will advance peace, justice, and inclusiveness, continuing the legacy of his predecessors.
”CAN prays that Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate be blessed with wisdom, good health, and strength to lead God’s people on the path of righteousness.
“May God guide and strengthen him in his ministry,” the statement says.

Archbishop Okoh also shared his belief that the new pope will work towards promoting peace, justice, and inclusion, following in the footsteps of those who came before him. He offered prayers for Pope Leo XIV, wishing him wisdom, good health, and strength to guide people along the right path.
In addition, the announcement about the new pope was made from the balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica in Vatican City. Cardinal Dominique Mamberti joyfully declared to the crowd in St. Peter’s Square, “We have a pope!”
The Trumpet Newspaper reported that Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost of the U.S. was elected as the 267th pope, taking the papal name Pope Leo XIV.
Pope Leo XIV, who is 69 years old, has made history as the first American to hold this position. He previously served as the Superior General of the Augustinians. He succeeds Pope Francis, the 266th pope, who passed away on April 21 at the age of 88.
