The administration of Governor Mai Mala Buni has intensified efforts to promote moral discipline and lawful business practices across Yobe State as the Hisbah Commission convened a sensitization meeting with hotel operators, liquor sellers, betting shop owners, and landlords in Damaturu.

The meeting, which forms part of the government’s broader campaign to build a socially responsible and morally guided society, focused on educating business owners about state laws and discouraging practices that contravene the religious and cultural values of Yobe communities.

Speaking, the Chairman of the Yobe State Hisbah Commission, Dr. Yahuza Hamza Abubakar, commended Governor Buni for providing the legal and institutional support that has strengthened Hisbah’s role in safeguarding youths, families, and communities.

Dr. Abubakar reminded participants that the sale of alcohol, gambling, and prostitution remain prohibited in the state, warning that any hotel, shop, or residence found to be engaging in or facilitating such acts will face sanctions, including possible closure.

“Our duty is to preserve order and protect society,” Dr. Abubakar stated. “We encourage lawful enterprise, but no business will be allowed to operate in violation of the law.”

The Commission emphasized that its primary approach remains public enlightenment and voluntary reform. The Director of Operations, Dr. Suleiman Kawuwa, and the Secretary/Legal Adviser, Barr. B.M. Shehu, explained that Hisbah’s role is to guide and educate citizens rather than punish them, but noted that persistent violators would face full legal enforcement.

Participants at the meeting commended the state government and the Hisbah Commission for adopting dialogue and awareness rather than confrontation, assuring that they would comply with the law and adjust their operations accordingly.

The Commission also clarified that the recent sealing of certain hotels and shops followed confirmed reports of prohibited activities, including the storage of alcohol. Officials stressed that the enforcement exercise was impartial and aimed solely at upholding the law and protecting public morality.

Governor Buni’s support for Hisbah aligns with his administration’s broader vision of strengthening moral discipline, promoting peaceful coexistence, and preventing social vices that threaten the wellbeing of youths and families in Yobe State.

With continued cooperation from citizens and stakeholders, the state government expressed confidence that Yobe will remain peaceful, orderly, and morally upright.
