The Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, has openly declared his support for the creation of Anioma State as the sixth state in the South-East geopolitical zone.
Umahi made the declaration on Friday during an inspection tour of the Delta section of the access roads and bypasses linking the Second Niger Bridge in Asaba, Delta State.
Speaking at the site, the former Ebonyi State governor said his support for Anioma State was based on personal conviction and his position as one of the leaders from the South-East, stressing that the Anioma people are culturally and historically part of the Igbo ethnic nationality.
“I support the intention and agitation for the sixth state in the South-East. I say this on my own personal grounds as one of the leaders of the South-East. They are our brothers and sisters, and we must support them,” Umahi said.

The Minister’s endorsement comes amid renewed calls for the creation of Anioma State from the present Delta North Senatorial District, which proponents argue would address the imbalance of having only five states in the South-East compared to six or more in other zones.
Umahi, while commending the Delta State Government for its cooperation on federal infrastructure projects, thanked Governor Sheriff Oborevwori for what he described as total support for the President and for ensuring the smooth execution of the road project through the payment of 100 per cent compensation to affected communities.
He noted that the Delta and Anambra bypasses to the Second Niger Bridge were redesigned by the current administration to decongest Asaba and adjoining towns, adding that the project would significantly enhance regional connectivity when completed.
The Minister reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to completing critical road infrastructure across the country, urging contractors to adhere strictly to timelines and quality standards.
The inspection visit was part of ongoing assessments of major federal road projects across the South-South and South-East regions.
