In a somber moment for Nigeria, especially for the Ijaw community, Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent Ijaw leader and a pivotal figure in Nigerian politics, has passed away at the age of 97. This news was confirmed by his personal assistant early this morning on February 18, 2025.

Chief Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, born on May 25, 1927, was not only a leader of the Ijaw people but also a significant voice in Nigerian politics. Known for his advocacy for the Niger Delta region, Clark was a lawyer, politician, and activist who fought for the rights of minority groups, particularly those in oil-rich areas facing environmental and economic exploitation.

Throughout his illustrious career, Clark held various significant positions. He was the Federal Commissioner for Information under General Yakubu Gowon’s military government in the 1970s and later served as a minister. His political journey also saw him as a key member of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), opposing military rule and advocating for democracy during the 1990s.

His commitment to the Ijaw cause was evident when he founded the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), an umbrella organization promoting the interests of the Niger Delta region. His efforts were geared towards ensuring that the resource-rich area received equitable development and environmental protection from the wealth derived from its natural resources.

Social media platforms, including X, have been flooded with tributes from all walks of life, reflecting the wide-reaching impact of Clark’s activism and leadership. Posts on X describe him as an “Iroko” who has fallen, a titan in the fight against oppression, and a key figure in Nigerian democracy. However, while social media provides a snapshot of public sentiment, it’s important to treat such information as inconclusive without further verification.

Chief Clark’s passing marks the end of an era for the Ijaw Nation and indeed for Nigerian politics, where his wisdom, experience, and advocacy will be deeply missed. His legacy, however, lives on through the many institutions he helped establish and the countless lives he influenced.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in due course, with many anticipating a national mourning period for the elder statesman.
