The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) headquarters in Abuja became the scene of unexpected turmoil on the morning of January 29, 2025, when a fight broke out during a crucial Board of Trustees (BoT) meeting. The incident, marked by physical confrontations and the intervention of suspected thugs, has stirred significant unrest within the party, highlighting the deep-seated divisions.

The meeting, presided over by Acting National Chairman Umar Damagum, was meant to address the persistent leadership crisis within the PDP. Tensions escalated when Samuel Anyanwu and Sunday Ude-Okoye, both contenders for the position of National Secretary, clashed. According to reports, the conflict was sparked by a dispute over the legitimacy of their occupancy for the secretary role, with Ude-Okoye being ousted from the venue after Anyanwu’s arrival, thereby intensifying the already fraught atmosphere

The PDP has been beleaguered by internal conflicts since the lead-up to the 2023 elections, with criticisms aimed at Damagum’s leadership and the ongoing tussle for control among the party’s top echelons. This latest skirmish adds another chapter to the narrative of discord, following a series of postponements and cancellations of National Executive Council (NEC) meetings intended to resolve these issues. The repeated delays have only served to exacerbate the situation, leaving party members frustrated and the public skeptical of the PDP’s ability to unite.

Adding to the chaos, reports confirmed that suspected thugs invaded the PDP headquarters during the BoT meeting, causing further disruption. The presence of these external agitators was a stark reminder of the volatile political landscape in Nigeria, where party politics often spill over into public spaces.

This incident could have far-reaching implications for the PDP. It exposes the party’s vulnerability to internal splits and external manipulations, potentially weakening its position as the main opposition in Nigeria. The physical altercation might also impact the public perception of the PDP, portraying it as a party unable to conduct its affairs peacefully, which could alienate voters and members alike.

Reactions from within the party have been mixed, with some calling for immediate reconciliatory actions to mend the fractures, while others demand a complete overhaul of the current leadership. Calls for emergency NEC meetings have grown louder, with many hoping for a swift resolution to the leadership conundrum. The PDP Governors Forum, under the leadership of Governor Bala Mohammed, has been vocal about the need for unity and strategic planning to address these internal challenges

The fight at the PDP BoT meeting is not just an isolated incident but a symptom of deeper, systemic issues within the party. As the PDP navigates through this crisis, the focus will be on how it manages to reconcile its internal factions, restore order, and present a united front. Only time will tell if this event will serve as a catalyst for change or further entrench the divisions within Nigeria’s once-dominant political party.
