The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has thrown his weight behind the proposed creation of Anioma State, declaring that “if that is the request of the South-South, then I am proud to support it.”
Akpabio made the statement during the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress, where he addressed party leaders and stakeholders on the growing agitation for the new state.
Highlighting the development prospects of the proposal, he stated, further that “if Anioma State is created, Asaba will serve as its capital, while Warri can remain a central hub for Delta. This is not a problem, it is an opportunity for greater development.”
He further underscored the economic rationale behind the agitation, adding: “The more states we have, the more development we can achieve.”
The Senate president also acknowledged the symbolism behind the campaign, referencing Sen. Ned Nwoko, who he said drew attention to the cause.

“He mentioned something important, that this attire symbolizes support for the creation of Anioma State,” Akpabio noted.
While expressing his personal support, Akpabio emphasized that the proposal must follow constitutional procedures.
“If this proposal passes through the necessary legislative processes, it will bring further growth and progress to the region and the nation at large,” he said.
The endorsement by the Senate president is expected to strengthen ongoing advocacy for Anioma State, particularly among stakeholders from Delta North who have renewed calls for its creation.
Akpabio’s remarks also reflect broader backing within the ruling APC, as the party continues to consolidate support across the South-South region.
