German Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund have won the race to sign Chelsea’s Austrian-born Nigerian midfielder, Carney Chukwuemeka, in a dramatic transfer coup. Barring any last-minute hitches, the England youth international is set to be officially unveiled as a Dortmund player on deadline day, Monday, February 3.
According to renowned transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea have reached an agreement for Chukwuemeka’s loan move, which includes a purchase clause. The option to buy has reportedly been set at a price exceeding the player’s €40 million release clause, signaling Dortmund’s strong intent to secure the talented midfielder permanently.
Chukwuemeka arrived in Dortmund on Sunday night ahead of his scheduled medical today, marking the final steps in sealing the high-profile move. As part of the deal, Borussia Dortmund will pay Chelsea a loan fee and fully cover his salary until the end of the 2024-2025 season.

The transfer is a major statement from the eight-time German champions, who successfully fended off competition from Chelsea’s sister club Strasbourg, AS Monaco, and two unnamed Premier League teams to land the highly rated midfielder.
Signed from Aston Villa in the summer of 2022, Chukwuemeka has made 32 appearances for Chelsea, scoring twice. However, with limited game time at Stamford Bridge, the move to Dortmund presents a fresh opportunity for the 20-year-old to reignite his career in one of Europe’s most competitive leagues.
Dortmund, currently enduring an underwhelming season, sit in 11th place in the Bundesliga after securing a hard-fought 2-1 victory over 1. FC Heidenheim on Saturday. With Chukwuemeka’s arrival, the Black and Yellow hope to bolster their squad and mount a resurgence in the second half of the campaign.
