The Borno State Government has taken swift action to ensure justice for a young girl who was brutally assaulted by Mamman Sheriff and his wife in Pompomari Bypass, Maiduguri.
The attack, which was captured on video and widely shared on social media, sparked public outrage after it was posted by Ahmed Baba Dikwa.
According to reports, the girl was attacked for entering the couple’s compound to pick a mango after returning from school.
In the disturbing footage, Mamman Sheriff was said to have been seen beating the child while his wife encouraged the act.
Following the viral video, operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Borno State Command, swiftly arrested the couple.

The state government, on its part, immediately stepped in, involving key ministries, including the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry of Justice, to ensure legal actions are taken.
Despite being out of town, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Zuwaira Gambo, dispatched a delegation, led by social worker Asabe Muhammad to follow up on the case.
The team, as gathered by The Trumpet, met with NSCDC officials, including the 2IC Commandant, Obi Ndubisi, and the investigating officer, Peter, to guarantee proper legal proceedings.
The Ministry of Justice, at the time of filing this report, has since taken over the prosecution of the case, while the Ministry of Education is addressing the matter from its sectoral perspective.
The NSCDC has assured the government that the perpetrators will be held accountable and face the full weight of the law.
In addition to seeking justice, the Borno State Government has extended support to the young victim and her family. She is currently receiving medical treatment at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), at the time of filing this report.
