The Borno State Executive Council has approved the renaming of the Borno State University to Kashim Ibrahim University in honor of the first governor of Northern Nigeria.
The development was said to have been part of resolutions reached during the first meeting the state executive council of 2025, chaired by Governor Babagana Zulum.
The meeting, held at the Government House, Maiduguri, lasted over six hours, during which key issues affecting the state were discussed.
Addressing journalists, the Commissioner for Information and Internal Security, Prof. Usman Tar, announced the renaming and outlined the steps required for its implementation.
“Council approved that Borno State University shall be renamed Kashim Ibrahim University, Maiduguri. This is subject to further legislative work by the state House of Assembly to amend the law establishing the university.
“The state Ministry of Education will also inform relevant regulatory bodies like the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), among others,” Prof. Tar stated.

Additionally, the council also approved a comprehensive street naming and house numbering initiative for Maiduguri metropolis and other urban centers as part of the state’s urban renewal drive.
The move, according to the commissioner, aims to enhance urban planning and governance in line with Gov. Zulum’s development agenda.
“Maiduguri is rapidly developing, with numerous new buildings, public roads, and facilities. Relevant ministries, departments and agencies will collaborate with agencies such as the Nigerian Postal Service, Nigerian Geological Survey, and community leaders to create a naming template,” he added.
The initiative, the commissioner stated, will ensure updated names are reflected on platforms like Google Map, public directories, and official records to aid effective development planning.
