In a proactive move to mitigate the impact of seasonal flooding, the Borno State Ministry of Environment has embarked on a flood assessment tour of vulnerable communities within Maiduguri Metropolitan Council.
The inspection team, led by the Commissioner for Environment, Engineer Mohammed Habi, included the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Juliana Bitrus, the General Manager of BOSEPA, and other senior ministry officials.
The tour covered critical flood-prone areas such as Gomari Layin Borehole, Moromti, 1000 Housing Estate, Dala Fatima Kurti, Dala Kogin Tifa, Polo High Court, Polo behind CBN Quarters, Damboa Road, and the Sulemanti Graveyard locations known for experiencing severe flooding during the rainy season.
Commissioner Habib stressed the importance of identifying drainage bottlenecks and environmental hazards that contribute to recurring floods.

Residents of the visited areas commended the government’s initiative and expressed optimism that prompt action would help prevent future disasters, safeguard lives, and protect property.
The ministry has assured that similar assessments will continue across other high-risk locations in the state as part of a wider environmental management and disaster risk reduction strategy.
