Borno State Government, in partnership with the office of the Vice President of Nigeria and the North East Development Commission (NEDC), has launched a two-day teacher training program.
The initiative which is under the Accelerated Senior Secondary School Education Programme (ASSEP), is aimed at boosting the quality of education across the six northeastern states, with a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, mathematics (STEM), and agriculture.
The program, as revealed by The Trumpet findings, was inaugurated at the Ministry of Education’s headquarters by the state’s Commissioner for Education, Engineer Lawan Abba Wakilbe, who announced the donation of 100 digital tools to support the training effort.
Wakilbe lauded the initiative, noting that it aligns with Borno’s educational reform agenda, a vision first introduced by Vice President Kashim Shettima during his tenure as governor of the state.
He praised the initiative, linking it to Borno State’s ongoing educational transformation, which was initially championed by Vice President Shettima during his tenure as governor.
He commended Shettima’s continued dedication to education but raised concerns about the challenges faced by students affected by flooding, who have lost essential learning materials like books and uniforms.

He was also observed to have stressed the need for relevant hygiene kits to be provided for girls to improve school retention rates.
Also speaking, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Regional Development Programmes, Dr. Mariam Masha, highlighted the broader goals of ASSEP, which according to him, is aimed at training one million teachers nationwide.
“By empowering teachers, inspiring students, and improving the education system, we can create a brighter future for Nigeria,” she said, noting the inclusion of skill acquisition programs for women.
The ASSEP initiative, led by Vice President Kashim Shettima, focuses on enhancing teacher training, modernizing classrooms, and incorporating virtual reality content to improve learning experiences.
