The long awaited revival of international water border trade between Borno State and the Republic of Chad is underway, following a strategic visit by Governor Babagana Zulum to the Baga Fish Dam in Kukawa Local Government Area.

Gov. Zulum inspected the ongoing dredging and expansion works on the key water canal, a major infrastructure project spearheaded by his administration, aimed at restoring trans-border trade routes along the Lake Chad axis.

Addressing journalists during the visit, Gov. Zulum announced that the reopening of the Borno-Chad trade corridor is expected to generate over one million jobs and significantly strengthen economic ties between Nigeria and Chad.

He highlighted the potential for increased prosperity in border communities and underscored the broader socioeconomic benefits for both nations.

The governor also commended the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), the chief of naval staff, the chief of defence staff, and other security agencies for their role in securing the region, which has paved the way for the safe return of commercial and agricultural activities.

The reopening of the Lake Chad trade route is seen as a critical step in revitalizing the region’s economy and fostering long-term regional cooperation.
