Suspected Boko Haram insurgents launched a deadly assault on a military base in Ngamdu, Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State, in the early hours of Friday, resulting in casualties among security personnel.
The attack, which took place along the heavily traveled Maiduguri–Damaturu Highway, caused panic and forced the temporary closure of the Ngamdu section of the road, leaving dozens of commuters stranded.
Eyewitnesses say the insurgents arrived in large numbers and opened fire on the military camp, catching troops off guard and engaging them in a fierce gun battle that lasted for hours.
“I left Damaturu early to get to Maiduguri by 9 a.m., but the road was blocked at Ngamdu,” a traveler told our correspondent .
“Security operatives asked us to remain calm. Locals said Boko Haram attacked soldiers and killed some of them.”
Local sources confirmed that several soldiers were killed or injured in the surprise attack.

However, a military source who spoke on condition of anonymity said the insurgents were ultimately repelled.
“The terrorists attempted an ambush, but our gallant troops successfully pushed them back. Some soldiers sustained injuries and have been taken to hospital.
“A number of the attackers were also neutralized,” the source said, downplaying reports of heavy troop casualties,” the source said.
As of the time of this report, the military has not released an official statement regarding the incident.
Ngamdu, located near the border between Borno and Yobe States, has remained a hotspot for attacks by Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) fighters.
The strategic highway remains a frequent target due to its importance for military and civilian movements.
